How MCP works

An AI app asks an MCP server what it can do, then calls one of its tools. Step through one real exchange with Openpane’s MCP server, message by message, exactly as it went over the wire.

One endpoint, plain JSON.

Remote MCP is HTTPS: each message is a JSON-RPC POST to a single URL. A server may stream with server-sent events, but it doesn’t have to; Openpane answers every request with one JSON object.

The model never touches the server.

It sees tool names, descriptions and results, nothing more. The app makes every call, so it can show you what’s happening and ask before anything runs.

Descriptions are the interface.

The model picks a tool by reading its description and input schema, so a server is only as usable as the words it sends in tools/list.

Try it without an AI app

Each request stands on its own, so you can ask Openpane for its tools straight from a terminal. Use a key from the API keys page in your Openpane account.
